Felix Neumann is a Dresden-based oil painter working in the tradition of figurative realism. Trained at the HfBK Dresden, where he completed his Diplom in Fine Arts in 2013, he paints primarily portraits and domestic interiors using techniques derived from seventeenth-century Dutch painting. His work was included in the Dresdner Ostrale exhibition in 2024. He works slowly, often spending several months on a single canvas, and maintains a studio in a former factory building on the city's outskirts.
Realism is never neutral. I paint people and rooms with as much technical precision as I can manage, glazing thin layers of oil over months to build up skin tones and the particular quality of light falling across a table or a face. But choosing what to paint, and how to light it, is never a neutral act. Every decision, who sits for a portrait, what objects surround them, whether the light is warm or cold, carries an argument about what deserves to be looked at closely. I return often to Dutch painting of the seventeenth century, not to imitate it but because its patience and attention to ordinary domestic life still feels radical to me. In an image culture built on speed, spending four months on a single canvas is itself a kind of statement about what is worth slowing down for.
