Lena Hoffmann
Lena Hoffmann is a Munich-based sculptor working primarily with recycled metal and salvaged glass. She completed her MFA in Sculpture at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München in 2018 and has since built a practice around material sourced from scrapyards and demolition sites across Bavaria. Her welded, wall-mounted pieces have appeared at BAAM10 in Berlin and in the Material Futures group exhibition in Munich. She maintains a workshop shared with two other sculptors on the city's eastern edge.
I give second lives to discarded materials. Every piece I make begins with a visit to a scrapyard or a demolition site, where I look for metal and glass that already carries the marks of a previous use: rust patterns, weld seams, cracks, scratches from decades of handling. I never try to hide that history. Instead I want the final sculpture to hold both its old identity and its new one at the same time, so a viewer can sense where the material came from even as it becomes something unrecognisable. The welding process is physical and slow, and I like that the work resists being rushed. Glass gets folded into the metal structures almost like a wound that has healed over. For me sculpture is less about invention from nothing and more about listening carefully to what a material already wants to become.
